How Convertick Works

Convertick is different from other online file tools. There are no servers involved. Here is exactly what happens when you use any of our tools:

📂

1. You Select a File

You choose a file from your computer, phone, or tablet. The file is loaded directly into your browser's memory — it does not travel anywhere over the internet.

⚙️

2. Your Browser Processes It

All the conversion, compression, or extraction happens using JavaScript running locally on your own device. Your CPU does the work — not a cloud server in another country.

⬇️

3. You Download the Result

The finished file is saved directly to your downloads folder. At no point does any file data touch our servers. We literally cannot see your files — and we designed it that way.

Why Choose Convertick?

Most online file converters upload your files to a remote server, process them there, then send them back. This creates real privacy risks — especially for documents containing legal, financial, or personal information. Convertick eliminates this problem entirely.

🔒 True Privacy — Not Just a Promise

When you use a typical online PDF merger or image compressor, your files are uploaded to someone else's server. That server may log file contents, retain copies, or be subject to data breaches. With Convertick, this risk is zero because there is no server involved at all.

⚡ Faster Than Cloud-Based Tools

Upload speed is no longer a bottleneck. Processing a 50MB PDF merge on a cloud tool means uploading 50MB, waiting for the server, then downloading the result. On Convertick, your local processor handles it — often 10x faster, especially on large files or slow internet connections.

🚫 No File Size Limits

Cloud tools impose size limits because server storage and bandwidth cost money. Since Convertick uses your own device's resources, limits are only set by your computer's available RAM. Most modern devices can handle hundreds of megabytes without any issues.

💎 Free Forever, No Account Required

There are no freemium limits, no "3 conversions per day" paywalls, and no email signup required. All 10+ tools on Convertick are completely free because our infrastructure costs are near zero — we are not paying for servers to process your files.

Tool Guides

Short guides explaining when and why to use each tool on Convertick.

🍏 When to Use HEIC to JPG

iPhones save photos in HEIC format by default since iOS 11. While HEIC files are about 50% smaller than JPEG, they are not universally supported. Windows computers, many websites, and older Android devices cannot open HEIC files. If you need to share a photo with a Windows user, upload it to a website, or attach it to an email that needs to be readable on any device, converting to JPG first is the safest approach. Our HEIC to JPG converter handles this entirely in your browser — no app download needed.

📑 When to Use Merge PDF

Merging PDFs is useful when you have scanned documents, invoices, contracts, or reports saved as separate files and need to send them as a single attachment. For example, a job application might require a CV and a cover letter in one PDF. A legal submission might require multiple supporting documents combined in order. Our PDF merger preserves the quality of all pages and lets you select files in any order you choose.

✂️ When to Use Split PDF

PDF splitting is useful when you receive a multi-page document but only need to share or archive specific pages. Common use cases include extracting a single signed page from a contract, isolating one chapter from a scanned book, or separating a bank statement into individual months. Our splitter extracts every page as a separate PDF and packages them into a ZIP file for easy download.

📉 When to Use Image Compress

Large images slow down websites, get rejected by email attachments limits, and waste storage space. Image compression reduces file size by reducing pixel data and adjusting quality — ideally without visible degradation to the human eye. Our compressor uses a smart algorithm that targets the best quality-to-size ratio. Use it before uploading product photos to an online store, adding images to a blog post, or sending photos via WhatsApp or email.

📺 When to Use YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

Content creators often need to download thumbnails from their own videos for re-use in presentations, social media posts, or video catalogs. Researchers and educators may also need thumbnails to reference specific videos. Our tool fetches the highest resolution thumbnail available (up to 1280×720 maxresdefault) directly from YouTube's public image servers. Simply paste the video URL and the thumbnail is displayed for download.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about how Convertick works and what it can do.

Are my files actually private?

Yes. Every tool on Convertick runs entirely inside your web browser using JavaScript. Your files are never sent to any server. We have no backend file processing infrastructure. This is verifiable — if you open your browser's Network tab while using any tool, you will see zero file upload requests.

What file formats does Convertick support?

Currently Convertick supports: PDF (merge, split, JPG-to-PDF), HEIC (to JPG), JPG (to PNG, to PDF, compress), PNG (compress), and YouTube video URLs (thumbnail extraction). We are actively developing support for additional formats including WebP, AVIF, and DOCX-to-PDF.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no hard limit set by Convertick. Processing happens on your device, so the practical limit is your computer's available RAM. As a general guideline, files up to 200MB work smoothly on most modern devices. Very large files (500MB+) may cause the browser tab to become slow or unresponsive if your device has limited memory.

Does Convertick work on mobile phones?

Yes. All tools work on modern Android and iOS browsers. The HEIC to JPG converter is especially useful on iPhones, allowing you to convert your camera photos directly on your phone without needing a computer. For PDF merging or splitting of large files, a desktop or laptop is recommended due to the higher RAM available.

Why did my conversion fail or freeze?

The most common causes are: (1) The file is very large and exceeded your device's available RAM — try closing other tabs and applications. (2) The file format is not supported — for example, older .doc files cannot be processed by web browsers, only .docx. (3) A corrupted or password-protected PDF cannot be opened by our tool. If none of these apply, try refreshing the page and retrying.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Convertick requires no registration, no email address, and no personal information of any kind. All tools are accessible immediately and are completely free. There are no daily usage limits or premium tiers.

Who made Convertick?

Convertick was built as a privacy-first alternative to the many file conversion sites that quietly upload and store your files on remote servers. The goal was simple: build reliable, fast, free tools that work entirely in the browser so users never have to worry about where their files end up. Convertick is independently operated and is not affiliated with any major tech company.

How does the YouTube Thumbnail tool work?

YouTube stores thumbnails on their public image servers at a predictable URL format. Our tool extracts the video ID from the URL you paste and constructs the direct thumbnail image link. It then displays the image so you can right-click and save it. Only the video ID is used — no part of your YouTube account or watch history is accessed.

About Convertick

Convertick exists because file conversion should not require trusting a stranger with your documents. Every week, millions of people upload sensitive files — contracts, bank statements, medical records, personal photos — to random websites just to convert a PDF or resize an image. Most of these sites store those files on servers, often indefinitely.

We built Convertick to solve this problem. By running all processing in your browser using modern JavaScript libraries, we created a tool that is just as capable as server-based alternatives — but with a fundamental privacy guarantee: we technically cannot access your files, because they never reach us.

Convertick is free to use for everyone. We believe essential digital utilities should not come with a price tag, a data agreement, or a privacy trade-off. If Convertick has helped you, consider sharing it with someone who values their privacy.
